  • What you need to know about: 2 different types of Skinboosters

Skinboosters have achieved great popularity in recent years and help to improve skin texture, pore size, fine lines, scars as well as hydration levels of the skin rapidly. Skinboosters comprise of microinjecting a specific product, either Hyaluronic Acid (HA) or Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN), into the dermis of the skin. An injection is usually done via an injector gun with microfine needles or manually injected by the doctor via small syringes.

– Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Skinbooster

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) has the ability to attract water molecules and bind to them. Hence, injection into the dermis of the skin causes the movement of water from surrounding areas into the dermis. This rapidly hydrates the skin and produces benefits as listed below. The injections are done on a monthly basis for 3 months and subsequently maintained with a  single session every 4-6 months as a general guide.

Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) skinboosters:
▪️ Increased hydration and flow of the skin
▪️ Improve the rate of skin healing, healing of acne marks
▪️ Improved collagen levels and elasticity
▪️ Reduced pore size
▪️ Improvement of fine, superficial lines
▪️ Fast, visible results after a single session usually in 2 weeks
▪️ Minimal downtime – usually needle marks, redness, slight swelling which resolves over a few days. Mild bruising is possible but rare.

– Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) Skinbooster

The most well-known brand of Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) is the Rejuran skin healer. Rejuran utilizes PDRN extracted from salmon DNA. When Rejuran is microinjected into the dermis of the skin, it stimulates new skin cell growth and collagen production. This leads to the rapid renewal of the skin and associated benefits listed below. Rejuran is injected monthly for 3-4 months followed by a maintenance schedule of 1 session every 4-6 months as a general guide.

Benefits of Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) skinbooster:
▪️ Reduced pore size
▪️ Improved skin texture
▪️ Reduced fine lines
▪️ Accelerated scar healing, improvement of depressed acne scarring
▪️ Improvement of pigmentation and generally makes the skin fairer
▪️ Visible results after a single session usually seen in 4 weeks
▪️ Minimal downtime – usually needle marks, redness, slight swelling which resolves over a few days. Mild bruising is possible but rare.

What is the difference between the two types of skinboosters?

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) has more hydration effect compared to Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) and results in more glow and shine and this effect is seen faster as well, usually within 2 weeks as compared to 4 weeks with PDRN. PDRN on the other hand has a higher ability to stimulate skin renewal and healing and has better effects on collagen stimulation, skin tightening, improvement of fine lines as well as acne scar healing.

To conclude, my preference is to use a combination of both HA and PDRN skinboosters to achieve the best of both worlds for my patients. I usually also add-on the use of lasers as well as heat-based machines such as RF and Ultherapy depending on each individual patient’s needs in order to maximize the improvement of his or her skin.
